NOISE
Noise is typically the unwanted information that alters an audible, visual, or electronic signal as it travels from a transmitter to a receiver. Although noise is not desirable in most applications, in this course students use it to learn how technology functions, to gain experience working with variable factors, and to think metaphorically.
Unit 01 - Understanding photography: building rudimentary film cameras that produce image noise.
Unit 02 - Working with variability: developing film with coffee and producing cyanotype prints.
Unit 03 - Understanding sound: building low fidelity microphones, creating instruments.
Unit 04 - Working with variability: distorting electrical signals, making circuit bent instruments.
Unit 05 - Noise as metaphor: translation, intervention.
Applications: Flash, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Garageband
Hardware: SLR film cameras, Darkroom print processing, B & W negative film processing, Pinhole cameras
